OPENING HAAR & CO
When I opened in 2017 I really wanted a place that felt fun, alive and energetic. I always tell people I kind of like the idea of a busy restaurant where you see nice flow of the space through the barbers, the font desk, the music, the energy of the clients. Really feel the joy coming through.
I wanted to build more of a place that had that “New York" place.

I’ve never experienced one quite like HAAR and co. I think we really emphasize customer care and the attention to detail is unmatched.
Capturing the Creativity of the City
This is very different than other barbshops or even salons that they’ve been to. I hope that people take away the idea that we sort of blur the lines a bit- Is it a barbershop, is it a salon, which one is it?
Different types of people working here and I like that because I think it really reflects New York City. Getting offered an espresso, hearing a certain type of soundtrack for the shop or the genuine welcome from our front team.
Right away it's something they’ll be able to notice.

“People have so much going on. It’s an escape—even if it’s just half an hour.”
I like to think of HAAR & CO an escape for even just 30 min. New Yorkers work hard and work fast. Someone may be coming from another part of the city, leaving work-on their lunch break, taking the subway. I like to get the whole team to think of that when they’re giving their best service. People have so much going on these days, it is an escape - even if it’s just half an hour. Just sit in the chair, get a haircut, get a shave, get some knowledge on some new products.
I think making the clients feel comfortable goes in tandem with the performance of the barber behind the chair. To achieve the service quality, time management (especially for those in a busy city like New York).
It’s important to believe in it if I will be putting it in my clients hair.

For me, it's important that if we are selling a product, I want to believe in the product. What stood out to me about O’Douds is that it is plant based, environmentally friendly, and is actually good for the clients hair. A lot of other products based with petroleum or vaseline clog the pores and causes buildup which can lead to scalp issues.
For a thriving business, I think you have to stay really nimble and absorb the change. Work with it and run with it. Our team is constantly growing, not only have people been here for years, we are bringing on new team members and barbers who really thrive in this environment.

It’s a happy medium in the sense that it’s light, not too heavy - you can run your hands through your hair and not feel like there's anything there. But you still have a good hold! The label is perfect - it feels airy! I’m also kind of obsessed with the scent. I make candles and I want to make one of these!

"First the styling treatment, which I personally use in my hair. It’s moldable, feels cream based and easy to comb through the hair. Doesn't stiffen hard later in the day, it’s pliable and really unique. Love the smell as well - and it’s plant based!"

“It’s crazy strong! I know we just talked about pomp and sharp styles are going 'out of fashion', but I feel like it’s perfect for those spaces. For a more vintage, old school look - it's hard to find one (pomade) that doesn't give a weird residue or get too crunchy or dried out." - Sarah, Barber

"I love cocktailing the Sea Salt Texture Spray. I find that if you want a lighter hold - pair with the Air Dry Paste. You can still have a lot of movement and still run your fingers through your hair. Conditioning Cream
Desert Island Pick: "I just want to keep my hair hydrated. I don't think I'll need anything strong so I think the conditioning cream will be enough.
I also see enough people who don't moisturize their hair enough and they come in with super frizzy, hard to manage and there is only so much I can do if you're not nourishing your hair." - Sarah, Barber
